Objective
The objective of this project is to obtain submitted art (two dimensional) from MLC school community as well as the greater neighborhood community surrounding MLC. Whether it is a painting, drawing, or digital art, the approved submitted piece will then be UV printed onto a plastic board (for a greater longevity) and affixed to the chain-link fence surrounding the MLC school. The theme is “Our Heroes, Our Values,” which is a reflection and celebration of our community’s moral foundations in racial justice, climate justice, LGBTQ+ issues, disability rights, and community care.

Goals

The goals of this project are to strengthen the ties that bond us all, especially those ties in the NW Portland community. We believe that art has the power to heal and bring us together. This project goes across (most) ages, economic backgrounds, racial identity, and gender identity to show that despite those differences, we are one.

Submitting Your Art
Thank you for your consideration in submitting your art. Requirements for art submission are as follows:
  • Submit art by May 15, 2021.
  • Must be on an 8”x12” sheet of paper, canvas, or digital copy.
  • To submit hard copies of art, please mail  or drop off art to MLC, 2033 NW Glisan Street, Portland OR 97209
  • For alternative  submission methods, email shauna.l.myers@gmail.com
  • Must reflect the theme, “Our Heroes, Our Values.” Consider giving recognition to lesser celebrated yet important heroes.
  • Must be Kindergarten age or older.
  • On a separate piece of paper include a paragraph that states your first name, age, and a paragraph on what the artwork that you submitted represents or means to you. Please also include your contact information.
  • The artist’s signature on the artwork is optional.
  • Art medium options can be paintings, drawings, collages, or photographs.
The MLC-ARC Art Committee’s role in approving art submissions
When we review submitted art, we are first and foremost, looking for the above requirements. Beyond that, we are choosing the best works submitted across the abilities and ages to accommodate our resources for UV printing. As MLC’s beloved kinder teacher Avril would say, give us your “best work.” Some works may be chosen to be re-printed in sizes larger than 8”x12”.
