The Rainbow Dance was awesome!
There was really great energy, and everyone was really into it! A ton of great outfits, from formal to fantastic, great tunes, and loads of fun! This was a really great event and we were so glad to have been able to support it! The Builders Club did such a great job putting this all together, and with the proceeds going to the Trevor Project, it's all for a great cause!

Check out the cool Holiday Staff Gift bags our volunteers were able to put together with all of your donations! With your generosity, we were able to give all 48 of our teachers and staff $40 in gift cards , 2 chocolate bars, plus a few other little items like spatulas, chapstick, pens and Lindt truffles. Amazing! The gift bags were organized by themes: Art Lovers, Outdoorsy Types, Chef/Bakers, Coffee Lovers and General (dealer's choice/hodgepodge). Thanks to all of our teachers and staff for the work that they do and the spirit they bring to MLC! Thanks to all the folks who donated and got sponsors to make this possible, and a special shout-out to Chenney for organizing this and making it all come together! The third and eighth graders wrote book reviews and had a walking field trip to Powell's to place them. It's great to see our students getting out into the community and doing awesome things! As a little extra, the PTSA bought hot chocolate for the kids! Greetings MLC Community,As we enter this season of thanksgiving, the PTSA wants to bring awareness of those in our community who need assistance. Food scarcity, housing insecurity, financial stress, and other obstacles to learning are faced daily by MLC students and their families.
You can help. Please consider contributing to the annual holiday meal fund drive. Your financial donation will allow MLC families to purchase food and other necessities during the holiday season. If you need assistance or would like to request a grocery card for your family, please contact MLC's school social worker, Clement. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY! So many fun goings-on at MLC in October! Dana has put together a fantastic slate of 1x8 electives that start this month. If you want to take a look, here are links to the 1x3, 4x6, and 7x8 electives catalogs. Other MLC traditions to look forward to: the Halloween Parade, the Kindergarten trip to the Pumpkin Patch, and Anna and Betsy will be taking their 4x6 to Camp Hancock in Eastern Oregon. All of these opportunities are made possible by PTSA funding and our biggest fundraiser is the MLC annual auction. We are looking for an auction coordinator and team to organize our 2023 event. If you are interested, please email Jeremy for more details. There's never been a better time to get involved with MLC! Do you want to get involved at MLC but not sure how? We have lots of opportunities but ask yourself, how much time do I have...? I have 15 minutes per week: Our BottleDrop coordinator, TJ is looking for someone to commit to handing out BottleDrop blue bags to parents waiting to pick up their kids after school. Only 15 minutes a WEEK. Email her to help out! I have 45 minutes per week: Teach an elective! MLC's Electives are an integral part of what makes MLC magical. Electives are hands-on, activity focused classes that introduce students in the 1st-8th grades to new topics, information, and learning experiences while at the same time giving caring adults and older students the chance to share their talents, passions and interests. If you sign up to teach an elective, you decide what you would like to offer. Email our amazing electives coordinator, Dana Lipson for more information! I have an hour per week: The PTSA Clothing Center and Food Pantry (CCFP) needs volunteers to help fold and organize clothing and be there to assist students one hour per week. Email Alisa to sign up! I have two hours per week: Host an intern! MLC’s Work Based Learning Program is an experiential opportunity for our high school students to learn outside of the classroom. Our program runs from September through May. Students commit to 2-hour shifts on Wednesday afternoons between the approximate hours of 1pm-3pm. Days and times of the week may be flexible if student's schedules permit. If you are interested in hosting one or more students and/or in supporting our students through one time career related learning activities, please let Tanya, our coordinator know! I have a few hours on the weekend: Be a parking attendant during Timbers and Thorns games! This is a very lucrative and easy fundraiser--we have already raised $1,300 from two games. The next game is Sunday, September 25 with shifts from noon-2PM and 2PM-4PM. Sign up for a two hour shift here! Don't miss out! Get your name in the MLC directory! The PTSA has two openings on its board: President (can be co-Presidents) and Vice President. Each position is a two-year term starting July 1, 2022. Attached is a very general description of each role. For more details, you can take a look at this document that maps out all that the PTSA does as a board and volunteer community over the course of the year. Over the past four years as PTSA president, I've had the pleasure of working with this diverse community including fellow MLC parents who became dear friends, MLC teachers who inspire me, MLC students who make me laugh. Has it been easy? No. But is anything worthwhile easy? Here's where I'm going to get real with you: When you chose MLC for your child, you made the choice to join a community. Our community thrives because a lot of people care deeply about MLC and its students. Don't fall into the trap of believing that someone else will step up or some other parent will do the hard stuff that makes MLC so magical for your student. The PTSA is holding a special election meeting on Tuesday, June 7 at 6:30PM via Zoom. If you are ready to throw your hat into the ring, please email me beforehand so that I can officially nominate you at the meeting on June 7. THANK YOU! Alisa -- Alisa Welch MLC PTSA President Metropolitan Learning Center So excited to have a planting plan for Avril's Butterfly garden. Thanks to parent Laura Hartzell, we've got an excellent plan to attract butterflies, bees, and other beneficial creatures by utilizing native plants and shrubs. Please use this plan when purchasing plants at any Portland-area nursery.
